In Situ is an arts management consultancy founded by Tan E-Jan, a creative producer and arts consultant based in Malaysia. ‘Situ’ is about placemaking – ‘site’, ‘situate’, a ‘local position’, essentially, ‘here’; in Bahasa Malaysia, however, ‘Situ’ means ‘there’. These meanings play against one another in a way that captures the sort of work E-Jan is interested in: the collaborative the entangling in the facilitation of art and futures that makes ‘t/here’.
In Situ is in the pursuit of knowledge and meaning-making in the areas of ‘body, evolution, origins’ in relation to utility and art; seeking to nurture creative sparks that arise from the entanglements of facilitator and observer with an artwork and its artists. Consider this a twist on the ethnographic practice of an anthropologist whose presence, which amounts to an intensive sort of ‘being there’, allows for spirited and constructive exchange between and among cultures.
In Situ, therefore, plays the role of facilitating the building of strong networks of Malaysian and Southeast Asian arts managers that connect locally and internationally. In Situ’s areas of focus reflects this vision: first, the focus on capacity building, where In Situ will be actively involved in nurturing emerging arts managers in the Southeast Asian region, which will in turn lend to the raising of international visibility towards Malaysian and Southeast Asian contemporary performing arts. Second, to promote sustainable practices in independent arts management endeavours while increasing and deepening international exchange and networking opportunities among Southeast Asian and international art practitioners within and without the region.
